While in New Orleans this February, I had to stop by Tchoup Industries' brick and mortar store. I had the opportunity to meet and chat with Patti, designer and founder of Tchoup, about the all-female company made up by 3 other sewers and a marketing/event sales person. All of the bags are handmade in New Orleans' beautigul Lower Garden District, where materials are cut and sewn in their retail shop, pictured below.
I was gifted the mini backpack in charcoal which is made of a waxed cotton canvas body to repel water. I wore it out in NOLA in the rain (Cafe Du Monde was a longer bike ride than expected) and witnessed the water droplets bead up and roll off the surface of the fabric. Materials are purchased as "seconds" from auto industry manufacturers (stock that has been rejected for minor color or quality issues). Inside, you can find two large pockets along with a large exterior pocket for extra storage. With repurposed adjustable shoulder straps, Tchoup's variety of bags have a heavy duty feel, perfect for daily wear as well as adventures. Did I mention the amazing steel hook closure doubles as (*drumroll*), a bottle opener made in Lafayette, LA ! Truly, these bags are #NOLA at heart.
I also received the Beads & Brass koozy to dress up my beverage while venturing around town. Using Mardi Gras as inspiration, see how they make these amazing patterns below:
Whether it's backpacks, fannypacks, koozies, wallets or key rings, I love that Tchoup is practical in design, constantly creative in their inspirations and, most importantly, loyal to New Orleans as their home. Use the code "TCHOUPLILAS15" for 15% off until St.Pat's Day !
